Hi guys

I'm about to take on the 4HB challenge myself, and googled this quinoa question as I'm a hardcore vegetarian (no eggs) who relies on dairy and quinoa to make it from meal to meal without fainting;-) For what it's worth, I skip read the Paleo diet, which I believe is one of Tim's sources. The Paleo diet says 'no' to quinoa on the basis that it says no to rice etc - namely that grains AND quinoa both contain reactions that 'fight' being eaten and generate inflammation and general agro in your gut. I can't remember all the terms but I do remember (because I was extremely disappointed at the news) that quinoa's version of these little critters is called 'saponins'. Saponins get released because once the quinoa's eaten, it can't propagate (unlike berries). So the plant is set up to put up a fight in order to ensure its survival. I'm sure a small amount of quinoa won't be the end of the world and you'll lose weight. No doubt Tim was just covering his bases since his whole modus operandi is to give us recipes for effective short-cuts. Eating quinoa lessens the impact of the short cut.

I'll be tracking my progress on my new blog which launches this week, so you can check in to see what happens with my experiment! (www.caitlinmiller.com) Since I really am struggling to work out how to get enough calories on the 4HB, I'm pretty certain I will have to succumb to some quinoa action at certain times over the course of the next month ...

I was looking at the 4 hour plan and while it seems workable, my biggest concern was no quinoa! I eat quinoa every single morning for breakfast along with a protein shake (no carbs, just 24grams protein), so I can't imagine not doing it.

I come from a similar yet different way of eating. I did Body for Life after I had my kids 6 years ago and weigh less and am more fit now in my 40's than in my 20's.

I need a boost, and a bit of down-time from my current heavy training regimen (I work out 6 days a week, weights and cardio). I have to say that the idea of gaining strength while giving my body a rest is appealing to me.

I'm glad to see you were able to incorporate quinoa into the eating plan. I can do with the no fruit, but have to say the no-quinoa was going to be a deal-breaker!

Quick question, as you have lost weight, do you find it harder to continue to do so if you aren't adhering exactly to the diet? The reason I ask is most of the stories/examples given, are of people who need to lose a good amount of weight. In my case, I'm looking to take off 5 - 10lbs of fat, so I'm wondering if I will see noticeable results too?

Anyone else in that position? How did it go? Were you successful?

Thanks!

I can't understand the exclusion of quinoa either. There's no way I'm going to stop eating such an amazing food. Honestly, the exclusion seems kind of arbitrary...I think if Ferriss were a vegetarian/vegan he would have made more of an effort to test various grains to see if some of them were "special" and should not be lumped in with the others. It's much easier to just issue a blanket statement to "avoid grains." Also, why on earth are Irish oats excluded? And his whole "no fruits" thing seems to be based on his own single-person anecdotal evidence (that his iron levels spiked when he consumed orange juice), from which he concluded that fruits are verboten, and then rationalized it by saying that Northern Europeans would not have had access to fruits in the winter anyway. Uh...okay...but what about people living closer to the tropics and subtropics? They ate/eat fruit all the time. I think the real problem Tim had with orange juice is that it is a processed, chemical-laden laboratory stew. Had he eaten whole, low-glycemic, fiber-rich fruits (especially berries!) he may have had a different experience. The water, fiber, and vitamins present in fruit are surely a fair trade-off for the fructose (in moderation, at least).

Hi Paul
That was a typo - 100,000 visitors before you didn't spot it!
It should read "Cooked Meat" e.g. sliced chicken, turkey, ham, etc.
